GO!

Field 2019
Hawksbill Summit, Shenandoah National Park 2025

Running out the door to go set up at an art festival last weekend, I looked in the mailbox and found a postcard from one of my favorite friends. It was mailed from Yellowstone National Park. Over the next hour of driving, I thought about different types of adventurers including a couple women I am so fortunate to call my friends.

One type of adventurer is the one who is always going! This is Amy, the person who sent me the postcard. Every year, Amy crosses the county to spend a month working and hiking in Yellowstone National Park. Consistently posting beautiful shots of places she finds to walk near and far, I swear that girl is never home! She not only says yes to invitations to GO, she makes them! Amy, in my mind, is the Consistent Adventurer.

Then there is Donna, my friend the Spontaneous Adventurer. Donna will buy a one way ticket to a far away place because she doesn't know what will happen while there and therefore waits to book her return. Not long ago, she gave her thirty days notice to move out of her apartment long before before she had her ducks in a row at her future home thousands of miles away. She said she did that to force herself to move. Donna is definitely open to what the moment will bring.

Then I considered what kind of adventurer I am. I think I am the Determined Adventurer. Despite circumstantial or physical obstacles, I somehow seem to make adventures happen by believing that I can do just about anything if I want to. Sometimes I say, "What I lack in physical ability, I make up for in determination." Such was the case this month. A swimming injury on top of a childhood injury has put me in therapy mode for the last few years. But despite sometimes having a hard time walking halfway up a single city block, I hiked to Hawksbill Summit this month which is the highest point in the Shenandoah National Park. Last year, I started the same hike and went fifteen steps before turning around. This year, I made it to the top! Perhaps not an extremely difficult hike for some, with an elevation gain of about half a mile within a relatively short distance, it was an accomplishment for me.

So what kind of adventurer are you? Not sure? If you don't know . . . GO! Maybe you will be the Makes Up For Lost Time Adventurer.

SUCH A VARIETY OF WORKSHOPS IN JUNE!

In these stressful times, it is often easy to become indifferent or feel stuck. But don't let outside forces take away your enthusiasm or curiosity for life! Do something different. Allow yourself to be excited as a way to protest against negativity and fear!

June 8 / Meditating With The Four Directions / Rain Date June 22 (Ages 18 and Up) / Barrington Land Conservation Trust Property: Doug Rayner Wildlife Refuge, Barrington, RI (1 PM - 3:30 PM) More information and registration link here!

Participants will consider their connection to place, the other inhabitants, and the people with whom they are connected, near and far. We’ll create individual mandalas with objects from the ground to be left in the landscape. The experience will conclude with a group discussion, reflecting on this beautiful and unique practice.

June 12 / Lavare Nature Mandala Workshop (All things lavender!) / Blithewold Mansion and Arboretum, 101 Ferry Road (Rt. 114) Bristol, RI (6 PM - 8 PM) Find more information and registration link here!

In Latin, lavare it means “to wash” and is the root of the word of the gentle, beloved, and powerful flower we call lavender. In this workshop we will work with lavender and other natural objects as we allow our art, nature, and our own intuition to speak to us about what may need to be washed away either for the moment, or for good. Join a group of curious, like-minded people as we explore and experience the power of gentle beauty.

June 18 / Eco-Art Group Mandala Workshop / Artist Talk and Group Mandala Workshop, Fall River Public Library, 104 North Main Street Fall River, MA (6 PM - 7:30 PM) More information here!

This workshop begins with an artist Beth Adoette’s slide presentation of her nature mandalas and then is followed by mindful introspective time where participants consider why they may be drawn to and relate to certain nature objects. After that, everyone helps create one large nature mandala emphasizing that no one part (or person) is more important, or less important than any other. Nature Mandala workshops provide unique, memorable, and positive experiences for learning and connecting.

June 21 / Gratitude and The Sun Solstice Mandala Workshop / New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill, 11 French Drive, Boylston, MA (2 PM - 4:30 PM) More information and registration link here!

In this workshop, we begin by contemplating the energy of the sun, the force that powerfully, yet gently, guides and sustains us all. Then we think about the gifts we have been given individually and visualize them with gratitude. Come explore the idea of gratitude as energy. Make space for nature and art to change or deepen our sense of gratitude as we create individual gratitude mandalas which capture and honor our blessings in this moment. Celebrate the longest day of the year with a creative nature mandala practice focused on gratitude and the sun's energy. Connect with nature, reflect on the season’s beauty, and create ephemeral art.

Afterwards, enjoy refreshing herbal iced tea and sweet treats to honor the vibrant energy of the season.
